Convention Center and Parks & Rec Admin Building Recognized by U.S. Green Building Council of Virginia at Annual Leadership Awards

On Thursday, June 25, 2020, the U.S. Green Building Council Virginia Chapter (USGBC VA) announced the winners of their 2020 Leadership Awards.  These prestigious awards recognize Virginia building owners and project teams for their extra effort to accomplish LEED certification, and celebrate the local leaders who are working to create a healthier, more sustainable and more resilient future for all in the Commonwealth.

As an organization, the Convention Center was recognized for its accomplishments in the community – sharing the knowledge they attained through LEED certification with the hospitality and tourism community.  Staff has shared best practices in recycling, composting and energy efficiency, highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of sustainability.

In addition, the Parks & Recreation Administration Building was recognized as a Leader in the Virginia Environments category for their unique design solutions and environmentally responsible landscaping techniques.  The goals of the new building are to provide a healthier work environment, align with the city’s commitment to a sustainable future and provide the community with improved access to city programs.

The Convention Center has earned LEED Gold certification in 2010, 2015, and is currently seeking certification renewal using the new LEED Arc platform.  The Parks & Rec Admin building achieved LEED certification in January 2020.  LEED-certified spaces use less energy and water; save money for families, businesses, and taxpayers; reduce carbon emissions; and create a healthier environment for occupants and the community at large. Virginia is proud to be one of the largest users per capita of LEED in the U.S. In 2019, Virginia ranked seventh on USGBC’s list of Top 10 States for LEED.
