Team,
I am again asking for your support and participation in Earth Hour. The event takes place this Saturday, March 25 from 8:30 – 9:30 p.m. The purpose of Earth Hour is call attention to the need for climate change and to empower individuals, communities, businesses and governments to be a part of critical climate action for sustainable food and agriculture, climate education, conservation projects, renewable energy and climate-friendly legislation.
CLICK HERE to see the Mayor’s Proclamation, and please feel free to use as needed. The City of Virginia Beach’s website for Earth Hour is [www.vbgov.com/earth-hour]www.vbgov.com/earth-hour. Virginia Beach has received press coverage over the last few years, and we expect that will continue this year.

Kudos to VBCC Team Member Terence Zinemon!
DECA was in house Friday night (March 10), with DG providing dinner for 3700 hungry DECA attendees. DG used compostable plates, cups, utensils, and napkins to avoid sending waste to the landfill. Composting on this scale is relatively new at VBCC, and we are appreciative of Terence efforts. He went above and beyond, working directly with our compost hauler to successfully collect 700 pounds of material that otherwise would have gone to the landfill. Thank you Terence!!
It’s been busy first quarter at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
With almost 60 events, including:
– 18 consumer shows (cars, boats, RVs, flower and garden, guns, etc)
– 5 large sporting events (wrestling, cheerleading, gymnastics(x2) and Shamrock)
– 3 large conventions (DECA, Fire and Rescue, Mary Kay)
– And more than 150,000 people through the doors, the VBCC team still managed to exceed customer expectations!
Look at this social media post:

Kudos to VBCC staff for their successful efforts to reduce electricity consumption. VBCC has just been named Virginia Green Convention Center of the Year, at the 4th Annual Virginia Green Reavel Conference, for their energy reduction and ongoing commitment to the Virginia Green Program. Check out the VBCC staff demonstrate how to use the emergency stair chairs during a safety training.
Pilot reporter Lee Tolliver recently covered the The Virginia Flower and Garden Expo at the VBCC in an article. The following stats were provided by Brian Miller, showing off how cool our beloved convention center building is!
· This is the 23rd year for The Virginia Flower and Garden Expo
· This year the show is covering over 75,000 sq ft of space
· The buildup of landscapes begins Sunday night and finishes by opening on Friday at 10:00am
· This year the expo is purchasing renewable energy credits to offset the carbon footprint of the show. This is equivalent to avoiding 13 tons of CO2 emissions, planting 10 acres of US Forest, or taking 3 cars off the road for one year!
· The Virginia Beach Convention Center is also a LEED certified facility by the US Green Building Council. Some of the sustainable practices include a robust recycling program, high efficiency LED lighting and composting. VBCC appreciates that the VA Flower and Garden Expo allows the VBCC to use the mulch from the show on our own grounds, rather than disposing of the mulch in the landfill. Over the years, we estimate that this action has diverted thousands of pounds of waste from our landfill.
